WINDANSEA

A La Jolla pearl where scuba divers are an exotic, unknown species.

If you  walk towards the water in scuba gear at Windansea, be prepared for surfers asking you with friendly, respectful grins on their faces "Dude, are you, like, gonna go in here and dive?".  This site is still a somewhat secret spot for divers between La Jolla and Pacific Beach.  It's a well-known classic amongst surfers though, one of the best brews at the La Jolla Brewing Company was their Windansea Wheat.

The diving is very relaxed.  Shallow water, beautiful patches of featherboa kelp and some giant kelp strands every couple of meters.  Lotsa fish - good photo spot on a sunny day with good viz.  Watch the conditions.  When the surf is high, the visibility won't be spectacular, and the entry/exit an adventure.  The beach slopes smoothly except for one small steep part directly at the waterline which causes the waves to break violently at that point.  Once you are through that, everything is groovy and a beautiful dive lies ahead.
